DAV NORDIC enhances traffic safety on Denmark’s third-largest bridge

The Storstrøm Bridge is one of Denmark’s largest infrastructure projects and a key part of the future railway corridor between Copenhagen and Germany. As a subcontractor, DAV NORDIC has played a central role in the project by supplying and installing bridge safety barriers.

The Danish Road Directorate began construction of the new Storstrøm Bridge connecting Zealand and Falster via Masnedø—back in 2020. The nearly 4‑km bridge will play a crucial role for regional mobility and for the international railway corridor linking Copenhagen and Germany. Once completed, it will also be the third-largest bridge in Denmark, surpassed only by the Øresund Bridge and the Great Belt Bridge.

Meeting future traffic demands

An analysis by Banedanmark showed that the existing Storstrøm Bridge would not be able to handle the increased traffic volumes expected once the Fehmarn Belt connection to Germany opens. At the same time, the old bridge was in such poor condition that maintaining it would require extensive effort. Constructing a new, modern bridge therefore became essential to secure capacity and reliable operations for the future.

The new bridge will feature an electrified railway line with two tracks, designed for speeds up to 200 km/h. In addition, it will include a two‑lane roadway with a speed limit of 80 km/h, ensuring an efficient road connection between Falster and South Zealand. To promote green mobility and recreational use, the bridge will also offer a pedestrian and bicycle path allowing both motorists and vulnerable road users to cross the Storstrøm strait safely.

A collaboration involving multiple partners

The Danish Road Directorate is the client for the project, while the Italian joint venture SBJV is the main contractor responsible for constructing the bridge.

For the project, DAV NORDIC supplied approximately 8,600 meters of bridge safety barriers and installed 3,300 meters of guardrail. The work spanned several years, beginning with the contract signing in 2020. The first sleeves for bolt groups were delivered at the end of the same year, and guardrail installation began in autumn 2024. Installation of the bridge safety barriers took place from January 2025, and the project was completed in December 2025.

Flemming Benn, Project Manager at DAV NORDIC, comments on the project:

It has been both exciting and challenging to be part of a project as large as the Storstrøm Bridge. Being responsible for the delivery and installation of safety barriers on Masnedø, Falster, and the new bridge has been highly educational, and working with an international main contractor has provided valuable experience.

Flemming Benn, DAV NORDIC

The Storstrøm Bridge has not only been a major national infrastructure project it has also provided DAV NORDIC with valuable insight into complex design processes and international coordination. Collaboration with SBJV and other partners has strengthened competencies and demonstrated how much can be achieved through joint effort and open dialogue. These experiences position DAV NORDIC even more strongly for future projects, where quality, safety, and partnership continue to be at the forefront.

The Danish Road Directorate expects the nearly 4‑km bridge to open to traffic no later than February 2026.
