DAV NORDIC, as a subcontractor for MT Højgaard, has renovated the Svanemøllen Viaduct, connecting Østerbrogade to Strandvejen. The 60-meter-long bridge has been reinforced with 132 tons of steel and upgraded with a new bike path and sidewalk.

The Svanemøllen Viaduct, originally constructed in 1905, underwent significant upgrades due to wear and tear from years of use. Key parts of the concrete structure have been replaced with steel bridge components. Steel beams weighing between 5 and 9 tons were installed to replace sections of the concrete, and an extensive steel deck was laid on top, featuring a new bike path and sidewalk. A total of 132 tons of steel was delivered and installed, requiring precision in steel supply, assembly, and collaboration to ensure the project’s success.

Super cycle path is ready

The bridge renovation has been underway for over five months and is finally being completed on September 30th. During this period, DAV NORDIC worked around the clock across eight weekends, using cranes of up to 450 tons to lift bridge components on and off the structure. This required meticulous planning regarding steel deliveries, assembly teams, and road closures. Beneath the bridge lies an eight-track railway, necessitating the highest safety standards throughout the project.

As part of the renovation, new district heating and water pipes were installed within the structure, and DAV NORDIC also constructed protective screen roofs along the length of the bridge.

The new super cycle path, added as a final touch to the project, features a springy rubber surface, contributing to an integrated network of cycle paths in the Greater Copenhagen area, where cycling infrastructure is a top priority for commuters. Finally, a new railing was installed, hot-dip galvanized and painted white, serving as an elegant finishing touch to the bridge.
