The Port of Fredericia has been expanded, and so has the noise barrier

In 2021, DAV NORDIC was responsible for the construction of a 10-meter-high noise barrier at the Port of Fredericia. In 2023, the expansion of the port began, and along with it, the noise barrier was to be extended.

Fredericia Port is Denmark’s second-largest container port, and over the past two years, container volumes have grown by nearly 40%. To support this growth while maintaining safe and efficient cargo handling, it was decided to expand the port by approximately 70,000 m² of container space. A key requirement of the project was that the noise contribution should not increase, ensuring that neighboring areas would not be negatively affected by the expansion. Therefore, an additional noise barrier had to be constructed alongside the existing one to provide significantly better shielding for Kanalbyen and the nearby apartment buildings.

552-Meter Noise Barrier Extends the Design

At DAV NORDIC, we have installed an additional 552 meters of noise barrier for the port expansion on behalf of ADP – Associated Danish Ports A/S. With this extension, we have delivered and installed a total of 890 meters of noise barrier in the Fredericia port area, including the 335 meters established in 2021. As the main contractor for the project, we were responsible for the production, delivery, and installation of the noise barrier. Work on the barrier began in December 2024 and was completed in May 2025.

The noise barrier maintains the same unique design as before, with transparent panels, wooden slats, and lacquered cassettes, which together create the image of stacked containers. This way, noise reduction is combined with visual aesthetics.

Combination with Existing Concrete Wall

In the new port area, a 90-meter-long concrete wall had already been constructed to reduce noise from the port. The wall stands 20 meters tall and is built in curved sections that soften its appearance while providing strength despite its limited thickness. The new noise barrier integrates with the concrete wall, extending on both sides to create a cohesive structure throughout the area. This results in a total of 642 meters of noise barrier surrounding the port expansion, significantly reducing noise levels from the port toward the neighboring areas. About ADP

ADP is the largest port operating company in Southern Denmark and manages the ports of Fredericia and Nyborg, which handle all types of cargo with great flexibility — including containers, dry and liquid bulk, RO/RO, and project cargo. The central location of these two ports makes them key infrastructure hubs connecting Denmark with the rest of Europe.

In the hinterland of Fredericia Port, we have established Taulov Dry Port – a multimodal transport and logistics center that has become one of Denmark’s most important traffic hubs, where port, railway, and motorway intersect. Here, we develop and lease modern warehouse and logistics facilities.
