Stora Torget in Falköping, Sweden, has been transformed into a new and modern square for the enjoyment of all residents and visitors. The ambition for the square and the entire town center has been to enhance the historical features with a contemporary and distinctive design.

DAV NORDIC, in collaboration with Frida Nordmark, has supplied lighting poles for the project in line with the overall vision. The goal has been to create a safe, pleasant, and atmospheric lighting environment that complements the project’s objectives.

Modern lighting poles create cohesion with the culturally historic square

The new lighting poles are part of a larger concept, framing the square and highlighting the two green areas featuring trees, benches, and artwork. Additionally, they are positioned at the two entrance plazas to the town center and along Dotorpsgatan, which connects one of the entrance plazas to the square.

DAV NORDIC has supplied 15 conical poles, combining heights of 7, 8, and 11 meters. Some of these poles feature welded arms for street lighting, while others, at 4 meters in height, are fitted with lanterns. The spotlights on the poles contribute to a strong, defined light, enhancing the ambiance and atmosphere of the entrance plazas and the green meeting spaces with trees and art. At the same time, they provide a soft glow toward the large open square.

In addition, DAV has delivered 23 standard 4-meter-high lighting poles for fixtures placed along a street and around the square. These poles, equipped with lanterns, provide softer, more general lighting. Frida Nordmark aimed to create cohesion between the lighting and the overall concept, ensuring that the lighting poles not only complement the architecture but also enable the creation of a pleasant and inviting atmosphere.

The purpose of the lighting is to make the square a comfortable and safe place to spend time, which is why the more poetic elements of the lighting are equally important, such as the delicate light patterns. For instance, the light illuminating the new artwork installed in one of the green areas adds to the overall ambiance.

The 11-meter-high poles with spotlights have been carefully selected to meet the needs of the project. While 11 meters might seem tall for a large open square, they harmonize beautifully with the surrounding buildings and trees, enabling the use of spotlights to create the desired ambiance and atmosphere. Additionally, these tall poles serve as landmarks within the town center.

Focus on high quality and longevity

The conical spotlight poles are made of hot-dip galvanized steel in compliance with DS/EN ISO 1461 and are CE-certified. They have been load-tested in accordance with Eurocode 1, ensuring a lifespan of at least 25 years in a C3 environment, such as urban or industrial outdoor settings. The poles are finished in RAL 7016 and treated with Antistick/anti-graffiti coating, which further enhances their durability and simplifies maintenance. Some poles are also equipped with welded plates for Schuko sockets, which can be used for Christmas lighting or temporary events.

A successful project built on close collaboration

In early October 2024, Stora Torget was inaugurated, with over 1,000 attendees participating in the event. Feedback from both the client and users of the square has been overwhelmingly positive. [Read more about the inauguration here.] Frida Nordmark expressed great satisfaction with the outcome, which meets both the requirements and the overarching concept of the project. This success was only possible due to the effective collaboration with DAV NORDIC.

I know DAV NORDIC from previous projects and know I can expect high expertise and quality while their prices remain competitive in Sweden. This has given me confidence in the collaboration from the very beginning. Additionally, they are excellent at finding solutions to the ideas and requirements I have in my projects.

An important factor in collaborating with DAV NORDIC for Frida has also been their extensive and well-rounded range of poles. Additionally, the customer service has been absolutely essential.

The actual installation of the lighting poles was handled by Bravida in Sweden. Bravida is familiar with DAV NORDIC’s products, which made the installation process smooth and seamless.

About the Overall Project

In 2021, Falköping Municipality launched a competition to create conceptual designs for four districts:

Stora Torget is now complete and consists of various sections centered around the Malta-Johanna sculpture.

The landscape architects, Sydväst Arkitektur och Landskap, who won the competition for “Falköping’s City Center,” describe Stora Torget on their website:

“Stora Torget, as a hub for commerce and social interaction, must be strengthened. The open spaces, essential for Falköping’s vibrant market and event culture, are to be preserved and enhanced with the necessary technology. As a complement to the open space, the square’s edges are filled with informal meeting places and experiences. To address accessibility at the square’s longitudinal sides, raised surfaces are created and accessed via ramps and stairs. These edges evolve into attractive seating and gathering spaces and also accommodate a few trees.”
