DAV NORDIC served as the main contractor on a comprehensive renovation project on the Hylkedal Bridge near Kolding, where bridge guardrails and foundations were replaced on both sides of the motorway. The project required both precise planning and flexible handling of the challenges that arise when working in a busy motorway environment – and on a bridge structure, no less.
As the main contractor, DAV NORDIC held overall responsibility for the project’s progress, planning, and safety. This included coordination between our own three-person installation crew and several subcontractors: Låsby Maskinforretning, Ommen, and Systemafspærring. Coordination among all parties was crucial, especially in a project with so many work phases and a tightly defined schedule.
The project was carried out over four weeks and divided into two stages. Work was first completed in the southbound direction before switching to the northbound side after two weeks. The total stretch covered 440 meters – 220 meters in each direction.
The project’s primary task was replacing the existing bridge guardrails along with the underlying foundations and bolts. It quickly became apparent that several of the rear bolts were so corroded that they had to be drilled out manually. This required cutting new threads into the existing material – a technically demanding job requiring both skill and precision. Such work is far from standard and highlights why projects like this demand experienced professionals equipped with specialized tools.
Although the project appeared relatively straightforward on paper, it was in practice characterized by high intensity and numerous dynamic decisions along the way. The short timeframe and traffic complexity meant that solutions often had to be found quickly and executed immediately.
Here, the collaboration with subcontractors truly shone. All parties were solution-oriented and worked closely together to maintain progress without compromising on quality or safety. DAV NORDIC also received high praise from the Danish Road Directorate (Vejdirektoratet) for the efficient and constructive execution of the project.
Weather is, of course, a key factor in projects of this nature. Fortunately, conditions remained favorable throughout, allowing the work to be completed without weather-related delays.
Through effective coordination, strong professional expertise, and excellent collaboration, the project was completed on time and to a high standard of quality.
