Bicycle Parking with a Focus on Durability and Biodiversity at Hørkær Have

At Hørkær Have in Herlev, a new residential development is taking shape — and with it comes the need for functional and aesthetic infrastructure that matches the ambitions of the area. For this project, DAV NORDIC has supplied a total of six bicycle shelters in galvanized steel and heat-treated wood, creating a solution that is…

Function Meets Form — and Nature

In the shared courtyard between the newly constructed apartment buildings, a green oasis has been established. Here, residents can enjoy an orangery, flower beds, and a clear focus on biodiversity. The bicycle shelters from DAV NORDIC are designed with precisely this in mind. Each shelter features a sedum roof — a living roof surface that requires minimal maintenance while actively supporting the climate and biodiversity. The plants absorb CO₂ and attract insects, contributing to a healthier urban ecosystem.

Two Types of Shelters — Tailored to the Space

The project includes two different shelter types:

The bicycle parking combines traditional free-standing racks with multi-level parking systems that optimize capacity and make it easy to access bikes from any direction.

Raw Materials and Long Durability

The visible exterior of the shelters is clad with Thermo Wood slats — heat-treated wood left untreated in its natural color. This gives a rustic and authentic appearance that complements the green courtyard environment. Thermo Wood is known for its long lifespan, reducing the need for maintenance and replacement — an important factor from a total cost-of-ownership perspective.
The steel structure is hot-dip galvanized, ensuring maximum resistance to rust and weather conditions.

Installation Delay — for Good Reason

The installation was originally planned for November 2024 but was partially postponed to April 2025. The reason was that the courtyard surface, consisting of pea gravel bound with a surface treatment, cannot cure properly in low temperatures. To ensure quality and durability, the work was therefore postponed — a decision that reflects responsible planning from both the contractor and the client.
Despite the weather, the shelters were still installed, and the sedum roofs were laid even in snowy conditions.

A Green Choice for Modern Construction

In recent years, developers and contractors have placed increasing emphasis on sustainability, flexibility, and aesthetics. The project at Hørkær Have demonstrates how a well-thought-out solution for something as practical as bicycle parking can support function, design, and environmental goals all at once.

DAV NORDIC supplied the bicycle shelters as a subcontractor to HHM A/S, with Skanska as the developer.
