What Type of Railing?

Railings can be divided into the following categories:

CE-approved bridge railings – tested and certified according to EN 1317

Pedestrian railings

Useful Considerations for Railings

  1. Already in the design phase, it may be beneficial to involve a subcontractor who can assist with dimensioning, structural calculations, and drawing expertise. For CE-marked railings, dimensions are defined by the containment class. For pedestrian railings, there are a number of specific regulations to follow – such as the required load resistance in kilonewtons (kN), the height of the railing, and the maximum allowable spacing between balusters.
  2. When the client receives advice regarding railings, it is not always certain that the suggested solution matches what has been designed or is feasible for installation. Installation-friendliness is also important and should be discussed early in the process to allow adjustments before the railing is manufactured.
  3. Railings can serve several functions. In addition to the primary purpose of preventing falls, various additional elements can be ntegrated into the railing system: A glare screen to prevent oncoming drivers from being blinded, a mesh to stop loose objects from falling, or lighting that can be built into the handrail or placed as indirect lighting close to the ground. Railings are also frequently combined with roadside safety barriers and noise screens.
