A new and taller noise barrier in Nyborg reduces noise from the motorway

For several years, noise from the motorway has been a major burden for residents living near the motorway in Nyborg. With the installation of the new and taller noise barrier, the noise has been significantly reduced.

As part of the Danish Infrastructure Plan 2035, funds were allocated for a series of specific noise reduction projects, including the project at E20, Nyborg Ø. The existing noise barrier was too low and could not effectively reduce motorway noise. Sund & Bælt selected DAV NORDIC as the main contractor for the project, responsible for installing a sound-absorbing noise barrier at exit 45/Storebæltsvej.

Installation of the Noise Barrier

The project began in August 2024 and lasted until the end of the year. During this time period, DAV NORDIC removed the old noise barrier and installed a new, taller, sound-absorbing noise barrier, measuring 5 meters in height and extending 350 meters along exit 45/Storebæltsvej, continuing up to the existing embankment. Additionally, a 3-meter-high sound-absorbing noise barrier was placed on top of the existing embankment, extending 210 meters.

The entire noise barrier consists of sound-absorbing panels. In areas where residential properties are located directly adjacent to the barrier, transparent panels have been integrated at the top, providing natural light penetration and visual variation to the structure.

The primary goal of the project has been to reduce noise disturbances for local residents. Throughout the project, efforts were made to minimize inconvenience for residents, the local community, and road users. Sund & Bælt prioritized ongoing communication with local residents to ensure they were kept informed and involved, while also ensuring that the project timeline was adhered to.

To create the best possible solution, DAV NORDIC collaborated with In-Situ Consult to conduct acoustic measurements, providing critical data to ensure minimal noise impact on residents living near the motorway during the construction phase. In-Situ Consult also conducted continuous vibration monitoring to assess the impact of driven foundation piles for the noise barrier, ensuring that vibrations did not cause damage to nearby buildings and infrastructure.

Focus on Environmental Impact and Recycling

For the noise barrier project, Sund & Bælt placed special emphasis on sustainability when selecting a contractor. DAV NORDIC was chosen in part due to our extensive use of recycled materials in all our projects.

In the overall evaluation of the received bids, price accounted for 60%, while sustainability measures accounted for 40%. Based on a comprehensive assessment, DAV NORDIC was awarded the contract.

The winning bidder stands out due to their extensive use of recycled materials. 70% of the encapsulation material and nearly 60% of the absorption material are made from recycled materials,” says Kim Agersø Nielsen, Technical Manager at Sund & Bælt, emphasizing that Sund & Bælt’s focus on sustainability in the tendering process has helped raise standards for the use of recycled materials throughout the entire supply chain.

At DAV NORDIC, we value our collaboration with suppliers and their commitment to delivering on key aspects such as recycling.

By the end of 2024, the noise barrier was completed on schedule, and exit 45 was reopened. Calculations indicate that the noise barrier has successfully reduced motorway noise, meaning that residents are now less affected by traffic in their daily lives.
