Bicycle shelters that are both functional and environmentally friendly

DAV NORDIC has delivered 24 bicycle shelters with green roofs planted with sedum. This aligns with the broader theme of the district, where several buildings also feature sedum roofs. The bicycle shelter itself is made of hot-dip galvanized steel, painted in a special dark green color, and planted with vegetation suited to the Danish climate.

In addition to the sedum-roofed bicycle shelters, DAV NORDIC has also provided bicycle shelters with thermal roofs and standalone bike racks. All of this street furniture helps unify the district and support the overall design theme of simplicity, nature, and clean lines.

The many benefits of sedum roofs

There were several reasons for choosing sedum roofs. First, it aligns with the overall design vision, and second, the roofs offer numerous benefits. For example, they reduce water runoff by up to 50%, protect roof panels from UV rays, and thus extend their lifespan. The chosen sedum roof is also fire-approved according to Broof(t2) and helps prevent fire.

Another major advantage is that sedum roofs contribute to biodiversity for both insects and birds. They absorb CO2 and are nearly 100% CO2-neutral in production.

Sedum roofs have a long lifespan and require minimal maintenance. The plants are chosen for the Danish climate and retain a lot of water, allowing them to withstand longer periods without rain.

The task was to deliver bicycle parking and shelters that were both practical and in harmony with the architecture. We were chosen based on our custom solutions, and it has been interesting to adapt these solutions to the various needs of the area.

A district with many stakeholders

DAV NORDIC has been involved in all phases of the construction of Gartnerbyen. We have worked with H. Skjøde Andersen A/S, the general contractor for the project. The area is divided into three main construction zones, which are further divided into smaller zones, each with its own contractor. DAV NORDIC’s delivery of bicycle parking and shelters throughout the project helps maintain consistency in the development. This is another example of DAV NORDIC’s ability to navigate and manage complex collaborations.

The project started back in 2019 with the first phase, and in October 2022, DAV NORDIC delivered another order of bicycle shelters and parking.

The initial work

The old GASA site in Odense is being transformed into a brand-new district — Gartnerbyen — by 2025. DAV NORDIC’s new steel division has delivered 736 bicycle parking spaces for the district.

When the new district is completed in 2025, Gartnerbyen will cover 130,000 m² and include approximately 1,600 homes of various types and sizes. The district is designed for young people, families, seniors, and businesses, and will also include a shopping square, health center, office buildings, and possibly a hotel.

H. Skjøde Knudsen collaborates with DAV NORDIC

H. Skjøde Knudsen A/S, as the general contractor for the first 340 homes, chose to collaborate with DAV NORDIC A/S on bicycle parking. Project Manager Per Henriksen from H. Skjøde Knudsen stated: “We chose to work with DAV NORDIC because they offer custom solutions. This allows us to influence the specific solution, in this case, the bicycle parking and shelters, which was what we wanted. We also wanted a solution that was consistent throughout the development, creating a cohesive whole. The collaboration has worked smoothly and without issues. We are very satisfied.”

Steel delivery from DAV NORDIC

For five construction zones in Gartnerbyen, DAV NORDIC has delivered and installed a total of 70 meters of bicycle shelters, in various lengths. To optimize the use of space, both the shelters and open spaces feature 564 double-tiered bicycle racks, allowing bikes to be parked in two levels. Additionally, 172 single parking racks have been delivered and installed.

Behind the master plan for Gartnerbyen is Gartnerbyen P/S, which has been working since 2016 to develop and transform the old GASA site into Odense’s new district. With green spaces, sustainable housing, and high-quality construction, the project aims to create new opportunities in Odense.
