Fed Fredag (Cool Friday) at Tivoli Friheden has evolved significantly in recent years, and every Friday—and some Saturdays—draws large crowds of concert-loving guests. This has put extra pressure on the stage area, so Tivoli Friheden worked on creating more space ahead of the 2025 season opening. An unused area was incorporated, increasing capacity from 13,000 to 15,000 guests in the stage area. Additionally, the grass area in front of the stage was removed and replaced with asphalt to make maintenance easier.

With the reconfiguration of the concert venue, lighting and sound systems also needed to be reestablished, including a new audio setup. For that, Tivoli Friheden needed solid masts suitable for concert use.

“As part of our stage area renovation, we aimed to improve sound quality for our guests. It was essential to install permanent delay masts. To optimize space usage, we also wanted the option to integrate other technical equipment on the masts—such as CCTV, WiFi access points, emergency lighting, and follow spots.

We also needed the mast setups to be flexible, as some artists bring extra gear to their concerts. Furthermore, we wanted the masts to be usable for our other events on the stage grounds, like Halloween and Christmas,” says Kasper Norup Sørensen, Technical Manager, Tivoli Friheden.

8-Meter High Show Masts in Lattice Construction

The solution was 8-meter-high custom lattice masts from DAV NORDIC. A total of three masts were delivered—two for speakers, and one for both follow spots and speakers.

A key requirement was load-bearing capacity, as the speakers can weigh up to 500 kg. The lattice mast is especially suitable due to its strong structure. Another important factor was visibility—the mast had to blend into the concert setup without obstructing the view of the stage. Because of these benefits, lattice masts are a popular choice in stage configurations.

One challenge was the increased risk of people trying to climb the masts during concerts—for a better view, for instance. Therefore, the masts delivered to Tivoli Friheden were equipped with anti-climbing features to ensure safety wasn’t compromised.

Fast Delivery Through Efficient Collaboration

When Tivoli Friheden contacted DAV NORDIC in February 2025, they needed the upgraded and redesigned concert area ready by the April opening. We took this seriously and quickly began the design process and structural calculations, which were completed in record time so production could begin. As a result, the masts were delivered just six weeks later. Tivoli Friheden handled the installation themselves. This was only possible due to a solid and highly efficient collaboration.

Throughout the process, new needs and requirements for the masts kept emerging, unfortunately putting pressure on the timeline. Fortunately, DAV NORDIC was quick to respond and contributed both solutions and cost estimates for various options.

Kasper continues:

“Once we had jointly found the right solution, the drawings for approval and the foundation calculations were completed rapidly. This allowed our contractors to immediately start creating cable routes and pouring the mast foundations. Everything was completed on time, and we were ready with the new masts and all equipment mounted for the first concert.”

On April 12, when Tivoli opened for the season—with a full program of Cool Fridays and Saturdays—the three lattice masts stood ready with fixtures and speakers, ready to enhance concert experiences for the park’s many guests.
