The West Rail Line on Funen: Procurement as a driver in an integrated delivery

The Vestbanen project on Funen shows how strategic procurement and close coordination create efficient and feasible infrastructure solutions. At DAV NORDIC, procurement is an integrated part of project success – from planning to final delivery.

The West Rail Line on Funen is a comprehensive infrastructure project involving many stakeholders and a large, diverse delivery. For DAV NORDIC, the procurement function plays a central role in ensuring that the project’s solutions are not only technically well-developed – but also can be produced, planned, and delivered efficiently.

The project includes a wide range of products, including pipe guardrails, railway guardrails, road safety barriers, bridge parapets, vertical and horizontal screens, as well as staircases. Common to all deliveries are large volumes and repeated solutions that must function across multiple subcontracts.

Early involvement leads to better decisions

A key approach in procurement has been early involvement. The work with staircases, among other things, has shown how early dialogue makes it possible to optimize both pricing and the choice of solution – while also providing the project with a solid basis for decision-making before solutions are finalized.

Close collaboration with engineering and project management

Procurement at DAV NORDIC works closely with the project manager and the technical department, including structural engineering and drafting. The purpose is to ensure that solutions are thoroughly developed and optimized before being finalized. Once the drawings are approved, procurement translates the solutions into concrete orders and a delivery plan that supports execution on site.

Efficiency through standardization and planning

Where possible, standard products and bulk purchasing are used to create efficiency and maintain overview – particularly within product groups that recur across the project. At the same time, local conditions and special solutions are addressed through early clarifications, for example when assessing which screw foundations are best suited to specific site conditions.

Coordination across multiple stakeholders

The project has Banedanmark as the end client, the Danish Road Directorate as the developer, and involves several contractors. DAV NORDIC acts as a subcontractor on more than 30 bridges and delivers uniform solutions to different stakeholders. This places high demands on coordination and structure – and procurement plays a key role in ensuring cohesion in the overall delivery.

Procurement as part of the solution

The West Rail Line on Funen is a strong example of how procurement at DAV NORDIC is an integrated part of project execution. With an overview across deliveries, a focus on realizable solutions, and close coordination with both internal and external stakeholders, procurement helps ensure that the project is cohesive – from the initial considerations to the final execution.
