16 km of concrete safety barriers for the expansion of the Øresund Motorway

DAV NORDIC has been awarded the contract to install 16 km of REBLOC New Jersey concrete safety barriers, manufactured by Centrum Pæle, and the first phase has just begun.

October 2026, Silkeborg – DAV NORDIC has been awarded the contract to install 16 km of REBLOC New Jersey concrete safety barriers as part of the expansion of the Øresund Motorway. The elements are manufactured by Centrum Pæle, and the first phase of the installation of approximately 2 x 6 km of barriers in the central reservation has just begun.

The expansion of the Øresund Motorway is well underway. Sund & Bælt is the client behind this major infrastructure project, which aims to improve traffic flow on one of Denmark’s most important transport routes.

Construction work began in April 2026 and is scheduled to continue until the end of 2029. As part of the expansion, an additional lane will be established in each direction. Once the project is completed, the motorway will feature three traffic lanes and an emergency lane in each direction along the section.

DAV NORDIC is responsible for installing the new separation between the opposing carriageways. The concrete safety barriers are manufactured and supplied by Centrum Pæle and installed progressively as construction work on the motorway advances.

12 km of concrete safety barriers in the central reservation

In total, DAV NORDIC will install approximately 16 km of REBLOC New Jersey concrete safety barriers – comprising approximately 6 km in each direction in the central reservation, with the remaining barriers installed along the sides of the motorway next to the emergency lanes. Installation of the concrete safety barriers in the central reservation is expected to be completed during 2026, while work on the roadside barriers will follow in 2027.

The work is being carried out while traffic continues to flow on the Øresund Motorway. Sund & Bælt has therefore planned the construction activities to maintain the existing number of traffic lanes wherever possible. However, the lanes have been narrowed, and the speed limit has been reduced to 80 km/h to ensure road safety and safe working conditions.

A robust solution for the central reservation

The New Jersey concrete safety barriers used in the project weigh just under 600 kg per linear metre. However, their weight is not the only factor contributing to the stability of the structure.

The barriers are installed in a milled trench in the asphalt. This embedded installation keeps the concrete barriers securely in position, creating a robust and stable separation between opposing traffic flows.

Safety has been a key consideration in selecting this solution. The solid concrete structure and its anchoring in the road surface prevent vehicles from breaking through the central reservation and entering oncoming traffic.

At the same time, the solution requires very little ongoing maintenance. This is a significant advantage on a heavily trafficked motorway section, where maintenance work can cause traffic disruption and require extensive traffic management measures.

Working on a vital Danish transport route

The Øresund Motorway runs across Amager, connecting the Amager Motorway and Copenhagen with Copenhagen Airport and the Øresund Link towards Sweden. The motorway therefore plays a vital role in both local traffic and the international transport connection between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe.

The expansion is intended to address capacity challenges, particularly during peak hours. According to Sund & Bælt, traffic forecasts indicate that traffic volumes on the Øresund Motorway are expected to increase by 20–60% by 2040 (read more here).

The first phase of the project includes the expansion between exit 20, København C, and exit 17, Lufthavn V. In addition, a parallel slip road will be constructed between Ørestad and København S. The entire motorway expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.

For DAV NORDIC, work along the motorway will continue over the coming months, as kilometre after kilometre of new concrete safety barriers is installed as part of the future Øresund Motorway.
