From the drawing board to the service area: 30-metre-high sign pylon in Langeskov

A pylon begins to take shape long before it is installed by the roadside near a motorway exit. Behind the finished structure lies close coordination between calculations, design, production, delivery and installation – as well as collaboration across several disciplines.

A new pylon has been installed at a service area in Langeskov to increase the visibility of the area’s facilities and businesses to passing motorists. The 30-metre-high sign pylon is the result of close collaboration between DAV NORDIC and BN Skilte A/S, with BN Skilte delivering a turnkey solution to Hinnerskov Ejendomme.

Customised structure combining function and design

The pylon is built as a lattice structure, specially designed to meet regulatory requirements, functional demands and aesthetic considerations. The lattice structure makes it possible to build on a large scale without compromising strength, stability or design. It has been designed to carry large signs, with the option of adding more signs in the future as the service area develops.

The exterior of the structure is clad with panels that protect the structure and the electrical installations for the LED signs against wind, weather and unauthorised access. The panels also provide a protective enclosure when access to the inside of the structure is required for electrical work. In addition to their functional purpose, the panels contribute to the visual appearance of the pylon and have been designed to meet aesthetic requirements, allowing the structure to blend in with its surroundings.

The pylon structure has been calculated and designed to withstand wind and weather conditions, helping to ensure a long service life.

Close collaboration across disciplines

There is a long way from the first components arriving at the warehouse to the completed pylon standing by the roadside. Bringing a structure like this from the drawing board to its final location requires close collaboration, precision and careful planning.

Through a close and well-established partnership between DAV NORDIC and BN Skilte, the pylon was calculated, designed and produced based on regulatory requirements, the client’s needs and the desired design. DAV NORDIC carried out the structural calculations, determining the dimensions of the main structure to ensure that the completed pylon is adapted to and capable of withstanding the ground and wind conditions at the service area.

A 30-metre-high structure cannot be transported in one piece. At our facility in Silkeborg, BN Skilte assembled the pylon into three sections – two 12-metre sections and one 6-metre section – which were subsequently transported to Langeskov. On site, the three sections were installed directly onto a concrete foundation, bringing the pylon to its full height of 30 metres. The foundation was cast by SWECO A/S based on DAV NORDIC’s calculations, while BN Skilte was responsible for the final installation.

Preparing the sections for installation and subsequently lifting structures of this size into position requires a high degree of precision and attention to detail. The sections must align with millimetre precision when stacked and securely connected to each other and to the foundation flanges. Lifting a section several metres into the air before positioning, installing and securing it requires precise coordination and accuracy.

The completed pylon is the visible result of a long process involving technical calculations, extensive planning and close coordination between several parties – all essential to creating a robust solution that can remain safe and highly visible for many years.
