A significant milestone has been reached in the construction of the new bypass at Borup on Zealand. DAV NORDIC has manufactured, delivered and installed a 32-metre-long footbridge, which will provide a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists across the new road.
The bridge is made of weathering steel (Corten steel), whose characteristic rust-brown surface gives the structure a distinctive architectural appearance. At the same time, the material is known for its long service life and minimal maintenance requirements, making it well suited to this type of infrastructure project.
The project is being carried out for Køge Municipality, with Holbøll serving as the main contractor for the overall bypass project and SYSTRA as the consulting engineer. DAV NORDIC is the subcontractor responsible for the bridge itself, from manufacturing through to final installation.
The bridge weighs no less than 38 tonnes and was manufactured in one piece by DAV NORDIC. It was subsequently transported to site and lifted into position at full length onto its two concrete foundations using a large mobile crane.
The lift placed significant demands on both planning and precision. When a 32-metre steel structure is installed in one piece, there is very little room for error. The foundations, lifting equipment, crane operation and bridge geometry all have to align down to the smallest detail to ensure that the structure fits correctly into place.

The installation proceeded according to plan, and following the lift, the railings were installed, leaving the bridge nearly complete.
As the main contractor for the overall bypass project, Holbøll is responsible for coordinating the many different activities involved. The installation of the 32-metre-long footbridge was one of the operations where several elements of the project had to come together at exactly the right time.
Ahead of the installation, Holbøll and DAV NORDIC therefore maintained close dialogue regarding the foundations, schedule and practical arrangements surrounding the major lift.

Although the bridge is already in place, local residents will need to be patient. It will not open for use until the entire Borup bypass is completed in 2027.
Once the road opens, the footbridge will become an important part of the local infrastructure. It will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the busy road safely without affecting vehicle traffic.
At the same time, the warm appearance of the Corten steel means the bridge will be more than just a functional connection. Over time, the steel will develop its characteristic patina, allowing the bridge to blend naturally into the surrounding landscape while giving the structure a timeless appearance.
