When aesthetics, sustainability, and safety must go hand in hand, a steel construction is not always the right solution. In both Slagelse and Halsnæs municipalities, a more harmonious solution has been chosen this year to match the surroundings: wooden guardrails from the French company Tertu Equipements, supplied and installed by DAV NORDIC.

Guardrails are essential for traffic safety, but in particularly sensitive environments such as forests and coastal areas, traditional steel guardrails can appear dominant and aesthetically disruptive. Here, wooden guardrails provide a unique solution that combines a natural look with proven safety.
Tertu’s system consists of a solid steel core that ensures strength and impact resistance, encased in FSC-certified timber from European forests. The result is a robust and functional product that blends seamlessly into the landscape.
In Slagelse and Korsør Municipality, several existing concrete and wooden guardrails were removed and replaced by the French Tertu guardrail. This included, for example, a 40-meter stretch in a rural area dominated by forest and open fields. The natural choice was therefore a solution that respects and enhances the surroundings.
Halsnæs Municipality has also used Tertu guardrails in several locations. One example is the busy descent to Hundested Harbour, where an older wooden railing solution was replaced with 140 meters of new guardrail. What made this project special was the use of varying strength classes depending on the road’s alignment – higher classes in curves and softer ones on straight stretches. In a nearby summerhouse area in Hundested, DAV NORDIC also carried out maintenance work, replacing worn wooden casings on existing guardrails. This extends the lifespan of the original installation and minimizes the need for new production.
Not all projects require a complete replacement. In Stevns Municipality, the decision was made to improve the aesthetics of existing steel guardrails by mounting half wooden casings on the outside. The guardrail runs along a village pond, which is why the more organic look was chosen to better fit into the rural and natural environment.
A simple and effective way to integrate functional guardrails into nature-rich areas while also considering citizens’ experience of the public space.
Wooden guardrails like those from Tertu are gaining ground because they solve a concrete technical challenge while showing respect for the environment and design. They require less steel than traditional guardrails and can therefore also be a sustainable alternative for municipalities and contractors who want to think long-term.
Currently, DAV NORDIC is one of the few – possibly the only – Danish supplier of Tertu products and has therefore built up special expertise in both installation and product knowledge.
Our ambition is to deliver solutions that create value – not only in terms of safety and function, but also aesthetics and the environment. With Tertu’s systems, we can offer something that precisely meets that intersection Bendt Nielsen, Project Manager, DAV NORDIC
